Artist's Eye game review

Drawing is a form of visual expression and is one of the major forms within the visual arts.

There are several categories of drawing, including figure drawing, cartooning, doodling and shading. There are also many drawing methods, such as line drawing, stippling, shading and tracing (drawing on a translucent paper, such as tracing paper, around the outline of pre-existing shapes that show through the paper).

Learning to draw develops observational skills, hand-eye coordination and patience. It gives a person an immediate way to see accomplishment for hard work. It shows that improvement will come with dedicated practice.

The proof is right there on the paper. Learning to draw is also a basic skill that can be applied to other forms or art. Drawing is creative, instructive and fun hobby but for a newbie it can be frustrating as it takes a lot of practise before one learns to transfer her artistic visions to the paper.

Luckily there are some tools that help to trace the contours of a model picture and these tools are not just for newbies but also the old master artists used similar methods like camera lucida already hundreds of years ago.

Artist's Eye for Android is utility that aids you to draw a picture with real pen to paper. Choose model picture and while you draw watch your on-going drawing through the phone or tablet and model will be shown semi-transparent on the top of your on-going drawing helping you to outline the contours.

This is not cheating but a new way of working and learning as well. It is best if you can attach phone to some kind of support stand so that it stays still and both hands are free. Although app works in both phones and tablets I really recommend a tablet as bigger screen is much better in this.

You can freely scale and crop the model picture and choose the level of transparency to suit your needs. Some visual effects like negative and edge detection are available and depending on the picture they may help by making the contours better visible.

App has also integrated camera functionality so you will be able to take photos during your working and thus document the progress. And at the end you will want to take a photo of the completed master piece of course.

Model picture can be for example a photo of your friend, pet or house or a picture of some favourite master painting you found from the web. It is best to begin with something simple if you are a starter and move toward more challenging scenes as you gain some experience.

In addition to pen drawing the Artist's Eye can be used in painting, wood engraving, decorating a cake with a piping tube or basically in any visual arts. The slogan "Surprise your friends by becoming an excellent artist just like that" is however a bit exaggeration as it still, of course, requires a lot of work and practise to become a good painter.

However this app really is helpful tool in that process. Ad-supported version is available for free but ad-free full versions does not cost too much either.
