FIFA 2012 game review

EA’s sports games have undoubtedly become the top games for each sport, knocking out pretty much any rival that comes in their way. Yes there are a few that have managed to stay relevant, but for the most part, its EA’s franchises that have taken the top spot.

This could easily be said about the FIFA series of soccer games they have released. These games have been extremely dominant on home video game consoles, but it did take them some time to get the IPhone and IPad version up to par.

Thankfully that has finally happened, and you won’t be disappointed with the results.  What’s great about this game is the minimal controls you have to work with, one thing about IOS platforms is that the more controls there are, the less screen you’re going to be able to work with, and the more difficult it is to play.

With three buttons and a few mundane swipe options, the simplicity is there until you increase the difficulty level, at which point things get, shall we say, a tad more interesting. For a console to IOS conversion the controls where surprisingly well coordinated and they handle superbly. This is aided by a cool feature that they have incorporated into the game, If you’re playing on the IPad, you can use an IPhone or an iPod touch as a controller, freeing up the whole screen visually. While not everyone has an iPod touch and an iPad, it does make playing the game a tad easier.

The play itself is also great, unlike traditional AI players; these ones actually make intelligent runs and actually collapse when they run into other players. They also make great decisions when it comes to how to play their positions. Another thing that is very nice about this game is the variety of goals that you can score. Aside from your standard rocket like shot from 30 or so yards away, you can actually get the ball into the net using just small passes from player to player. And due to the game engine they use for this game, you can even get in deflected shots, and weirdly angled shots like you would be able to in a real game of soccer.

They actually managed to improve significantly over last year’s offering of the FIFA franchise. The graphics are even better than they were last year, and substantially sharper. The stadiums you play in look amazing, and the running animations in the game look great too, with only a few instances of strange rendering.  They also keep the controls similar to the ones present in FIFA 11, which is in all honesty a good thing, and with the inclusion of Casual mode, a mode that instructs you on how to use each control, it has made the game easy to pick up and play for just about anyone. There are certain key factors needed when making a great game, it has to be easy to get into, well designed, and the controls have to be adapted for the level of gamer your trying to reach, FIFA 12 has it all, and much more, and that’s why it  will stay on top.
