Happy Pet

Happy Pet game review

I’m a child of the ‘90s.

As such, I was obsessed with things like playing my Master System games (Alex Kidd!!), Pokémon, talking to my Furby doll (who eventually went crazy, screeching ‘My name is TA-LLU-LAH’ over and over at 3am) and incessant Lego building. As I grew, we bought our first radio with the huge sticker on it that said ‘now with CD player!!!’ and ditched our vinyl records.

After that, I used the internet for the first time on my brand new, envy-of-all-my-friends IBM 386 computer. I rocked. And then came the Tamagotchi and my life was forever changed.

For those who didn’t experience this miracle, the Tamagotchi was a device where you could control the growth of a virtual pet, from egg to adult (or rather until he passed away and you cried for a month).

This toy took up all my time and energy at school, at home and even messed with my sleeping patterns. And now, ladies and gentlemen, it’s back! The new Happy Pets Android app, free from the Play Store, is a new and much-improved version of the Tamagotchi.

While the gameplay is very similar and you still have the options to feed, entertain and heal your pet, as well as putting him to sleep and cleaning up virtual bodily fluids, you now have a few extra options like choosing which pet you’d like to have, a cute little mutt or pink bunny rabbit.

You can now also take your pet outdoors for a walk and shop for things you need using virtual money earned by doing tasks. It does for a child what the Tamagotchi did for us 90s babies: pretend we have a real pet when our parents refuse to give us one.

Now if you have a child who is constantly whining about getting puppies, kitties, bunnies and all the rest, then you know how difficult it can be to say no to them even though you know (as did my mom) that the feeding and bodily fluids are very real and will eventually end up being your responsibility, since all your precious offspring wants to do is play with the little critter.

To test out your child’s commitment when he or she says ‘but OF COURSE I’m going to clean up after him mommy, pleeeeease!!’, give them the Happy Pets app and let them show you how well they can raise their own virtual puppy.

If you get notes from school saying your kid has ceased to socialise during break time because all he can do is stare at his cell phone screen, you’re on the right track. Yes, to this day the Tamagotchi and its minions are still ruining children’s friendships far and wide.

So give this app a try with your child (just make sure to wean him off it by Christmas Day so he can enjoy his new real puppy… oh, and don’t forget to explain to him that real puppies ARE NOT capable of playing rock-paper-scissors), or try it out for yourself if you’re a 90s baby, I can assure you the memories will come flooding back and you’ll have a blast once again!
