Word Tower game review

Word Tower is a well-designed and well-executed word game for Android.  You have grids of squares that are 3x3, 4x4, 5x5 or 6x6, depending upon your fancy at the time.

There’s one letter places in each row and you have to find a word that fits around each letter. To win games and progress you have to clear letter squares by making new words as more letters fall down from the top.

To win games and progress you have to clear letter squares by making new words as more letters fall down from the top. To spell out words, just drag your finger to connect letters up. In a similar way to the classic word game Scrabble, each letter has a points value, and when each letter is cleared from the board, these points are added to the score.

You can build words from letters moving from any direction, including diagonally. To reach high scores, though, you should be able to see and make words from all directions with equal ease. At times it may look as if there are no more words to be found, and so you turn your phone upside down and reshuffle the letters, which sometimes gives you new inspiration. As in Scrabble, there are special tiles for bonus points (although some tiles make life harder), and these special tiles enrich the game no end. It’s such a simple game that you could play it with a pen and paper.

The game’s paper and pen design may well take you back a few years to playing Hangman with your grandma, albeit with a modern twist, and brings home the simplicity of the game. You’re there to make new words, and that’s it – there’s no need for whistles and bells.

It may be simple, but there’s little chance of Word Tower becoming stale, as you have many game options to choose from to add new excitement. You can solve as many as 26 towers in one game, or choose sets of 1, 3, 5 or 10. You will also have different levels that may allow or prohibit certain word types; level 3 only accepts nouns, and you can’t repeat words.

Although more serious games are now available on Android, there’s still a thriving market for puzzles and more casual games on this platform. The graphics in Word Tower are elegant, and the sounds, while not strictly necessary, are average.

One irritation is that the game doesn’t accept plurals, and its dictionary could do with improvement, as many perfectly decent and commonplace words are disallowed for no reason, despite no such restrictions being mentioned. This idiosyncratic set of prohibitions makes the game harder and in some cases impossible.

One example that foxed me was finding a 4-letter noun with ‘F’ as a second letter. Can you think of one? This wasn’t the only impossible task, though, and this means that an extended game is going to throw many more insoluble grids your way, making the game impossible to complete.
