Getting Your Old School Fix : The Top 4 Retro Video Games Rebooted for Mobile

04 May 2017

In this day and age, the sheer range of video games that we have at our disposal really is quite astounding, and nowhere is this growth more apparent than in the world of mobile gaming. At the end of 2016, there were over 631,000 mobile games listedand ready to download from the Apple App Store, a whopping 60% increase from the previous year – and you can bet that number will be reaching the one million mark at some point in the very near future

With so many options out there, the task of finding your new favorite game often feels like looking for a needle in a haystack. If you’re struggling to decide between all these newfangled titles then it always pays to remember what they say: the old ones really are the best. So, to save you a whole lot of time and effort, we’re here to run through four of the best old school video games that have now been updated for the mobile generation.

Set your thumb to download – you're going to need it!

Space Invaders

Space Invaders

Let’s kick things off with an absolute classic. Decades after it captured the hearts of the arcade hall masses, Space Invaders is back for iOS and Android and features every beloved detail that you can recall – from those pesky UFOs to the infamous ‘Nagoya Attack’ technique. In terms of playability, the settings have also been updated for iPhones and iPads in particular, with touch, drag and tilt controls all worked in.

Fans of iGaming will be pleased to hear that developer Playtech has recently released a Space Invaders-themed slot game which is also available as part of Sun Bingo's mobile bingo and slots app. The five-reel, ten-payline title features retro graphics and blips lifted from the original classic, while it's also set inside a virtual arcade cabinet for added authenticity.

Sonic The Hedgehog

Sonic The Hedgehog

That’s right, folks: your favorite hedgehog is back and faithfully remastered for your mobile gaming pleasure. Genesis title Sonic the Hedgehog really is one of those games that is instantly recognisable to pretty much any gamer because of its distinctive graphics, environment, obstacles and, erm, hedgehogs. Okay, so the touchscreen controls take a bit of time to get used to, but once you’re locked in then it doesn’t take long for the nostalgia to hit.

Or, if you want to veer away from the Sega classic to something a little more current then you can always try Sonic Dash, which, truth be told, has pretty stunning graphics and playability for a mobile game. The choice is yours!

This list wouldn’t be complete without a new take on a retro board game and, for us, it was an easy choice – Risk: Global Domination. Electro-pop band Tears For Fears were definitely right when they said everybody wants to rule the world – now you can do just that on your smartphone or tablet.

The updated version is really easy to play, features multiple game modes and allows you to battle it out online with up to six players from around the world. But the best thing is, just like the original version, everybody has their own preferred strategy to come out on top, whether it involves Papua New Guinea or not. Compared to a lot of other rebooted board games it’s pretty great and well worth upgrading to the full version.

You know what? Even though the first version of Worms came out over 20 years ago, in 1995, game developers are still struggling to conceive a concept that can match the simplicity of entrusting a small platoon of worms with an arsenal of bizarre weapons and letting them beat the hell out of each other.

Worms 3 brings the fun straight to your mobile and allows players to get busy with online multiplayer warfare – both ranked and friendly. There are also a bunch of single-player missions across four new themed environments and added customization options so you can make your team stand out from the crowd.

So there we have it: four awesome retro video games that have been rebooted specifically with the mobile generation in mind. Next time you need to get your fix of retro gaming, chances are you can scratch that itch simply by pulling your phone out of your pocket. What a world we live in!
