D Crypt Pro Word Game game review

D Crypt Word Game brings you the experience of puzzle magazine cryptogram solving fun to your tablet or phone without the ugly pencil erasure marks!

The game allows you to choose to solve a cryptogram quote or a cryptogram word list. If you select a cryptogram quote, you then can select the author of the quote. There are quotes from funny people like Will Rogers, Dave Barry, George Carlin, and Bob Hope.

Or from historical figures like Thomas Jefferson, George Washington, Abraham Lincoln and Mahatma Gandhi. And many other people.

If you select a word list you then can decide if you want the list of words to be associated with a Person, Place or Thing. All sorts of subjects and people to choose from. Once you have selected what type of cryptogram you want to solve, the game displays the quote or word list along with a "letter board".

The "letter board" contains tiles which include a "space" along with the 26 letters in alphabetical order. The quote or word list is displayed using the coded letters. You can easily see the layout of the quote as words are space separated with the authors name displayed below the quote.

The word list is one word per line. When you think you have deduced a letter, you select it on the letter board, and then select one letter in the quote or word list you believe it belongs. The game will then substitute all occurrences of the letter you selected.

Here is where the game is a bit different than solving a cryptogram on paper. Usually on paper you write the letter above the letter you are solving and you see both letters at all times. The game removes the puzzle letter with your solved letter.

So in effect the quote or word list has a mix of puzzle letters and solved letters. This did take some time getting used to because I'm used to the old way of paper solving. However after doing a few puzzles, I realized I like it better this way because it eliminates letters I have solved and it feels less cluttered.

The puzzle letters are white and the solved letters are green (on Android) or blue (on iOS) so it is real easy to tell the difference. You can clearly see the solved words emerging as you play. If you decide you want to undo one of the letters you have solved, just touch the "space" tile on the letter board and then the solved letter you want to undo.

The cryptogram will then return to the original puzzle letter. One of my favorite aspects of this game is being able to "validate" the current state of the game. What this means is at any time I can ask if the current puzzle is correct or if I have made a mistake.

What I do after I have decided I have decoded a letter and substituted it in the puzzle, I touch the "Validate" button to see if I was correct. There is nothing worse than putting in an incorrect letter, then having that decision make it more likely to make future errors.

Using this feature I can have the piece of mind. I'm working toward a correct solution yet fully knowing I'm figuring it out myself! If the Validate tells me I've made a mistake the game allows me to either undo it or the game will fix it for me.

I choose the undo 99% of the time because it's more fun to solve it on my own. However it is nice that the game gives me the option of doing it for me if I feel "stuck". Also if you are stuck you can get a "hint".

The program will tell you the correct letter for one of the remaining letters in the cryptogram. For cryptogram solving veterans this is probably not needed, but for someone new to cryptogram solving it is a way to get a head start.

Usually that first letter or two are the hardest to find and this feature makes it easier to get going. The nice thing it is optional - the player decides if they want to use it or not. The game is available on both iOS and Android including the Kindle.

It supports both tablet and phone form factors. Also the game supports portrait or landscape by laying out the screen when you rotate your device. The game does not have flashy graphics. And I think a word game doesn't need flashy graphics as I find them more distracting than adding anything to the game play.

It really does feel like I'm solving cryptograms on my tablet - just like I used to do in puzzle magazines.
