Jetpack Joyride game review

In the game Jetpack Joyride, you play Barry Steakfries, and you have just broken into a secret laboratory to steal a special jetpack. And you spend the rest of the game trying to escape this laboratory using the jetpack that you stole.

This is one of the many endless runner games that have made their way into the App store in the last little while. In this type of game the mechanics are often repeated and re-used, as it is somewhat difficult to completely re-invent the wheel, and one little miss-step from the development team can send the whole game down the drain.

Thankfully it doesn’t appear that they made any miss-steps at all when making this game.

With each touch of the screen, you are further propelled in the air by the jetpack that you have, you use this propulsion to avoid force fields and missiles that block your escape route.

As your progress through the game trying to escape, you will collect coins as well as run up a top score. These coins can be used to buy things like outfits, better jetpacks, and single use items, though the single use items cost quite a few coins. You will also come across vehicles as you progress, they can be used to gain a couple hundred meters towards your top score. The basic goal of the game is to get as far as you possibly can, while collecting as many coins, tokens and vehicle power-ups as possible without dying.

This is just one of those games that are highly addictive, once you pick it up you’re going to have trouble putting it down, under the simple premise that it’s just one more game. One game turns into a dozen rather quickly. One thing that they’ve added to the game that has made it much more, shall we say productive is the mission system. Each completed mission gives the player a set of stars, and these go towards the overall rank of the player. However unlike most games the effect of increasing your rank doesn’t stop there, it increases the money you get and that can be used to gain access to more of the games content as you go along. Thanks to the inherent nature of a secret laboratory there are quite a few little surprises you can pick up and use along the way. These goodies and some keen reflexes will help you dodge the lasers, guided missiles and other obstacles that will be in your path.

The game looks amazing visually, from the depth and the details present in the backgrounds to the animations of Barry, it’s all very well done and brought together. The musical effects are also very well timed, including the nice addition of a sound effect when you gather coins. It is undoubtedly one of the finer games to hit the App Store in recent memory, and it’s just one of those games that will keep you occupied and coming back for more for a long time.
